Originally founded as the Denver Gurdjieff Group by John Fuchs under the direction of Lord Pentland, the group remains in the Gurdjieff Foundation lineage with Demian Smith as the leader. While remaining faithful to the original ideas and methods brought to the world by the master G.I. Gurdjieff, participants work toward making these ideas and methods "their own" as they apply them in ways unique to each moment's demands.
The Gurdjieff Studies Foundation of Denver is affiliated with the Gurdjieff Foundation world-wide. Group work is similar world-wide, including practical inner work on not expressing negative emotions, self-observation, sensation, stillness, collecting and deepening of attention through sittings, and self-remembering, as well as shared maintenance of the property, craft, work with ideas and music, exchange of observations and impressions, and other activities as are useful for personal and group work.
Group work provides an ongoing support and means for one’s personal day to day work, as well as a source of direction. Weekly study groups provide an opportunity for exchange about experiences and observations, and to benefit from the experience of others on the path. The variety of types among group members provide a richness of experience and opportunities for friction which one needs on the Way. Study groups are in a question/answer format. There is usually a weekly task or common direction for an active effort attempted by members during the week. The reading group is offered twice monthly and provides an entry point to the ideas of the Gurdjieff Work.
There are days or weekends of practical work which usually begin with a sitting; carry on practical work of craft, construction or maintenance, cooking; include time for sharing of observations on work with a common focus. Often the day concludes with a special reading from one or another leader in the Gurdjieff work, some selections of the Gurdjieff—de Hartmann piano music, or another sitting. Work with Gurdjieff’s Movements is possible after one has participated in the group for some time.
